Our Mission Statement
Multicultural Coexistence aims to promote acceptance, understanding, and friendship among people of diverse backgrounds and cultures within institutes of higher education. We achieve this by providing access to supplemental resources for underprivileged students and promoting an environment that celebrates diversity.
THE PROBLEMLack of diversity in post-high school institutions is an issue that results in a lack of cultural awareness and knowledge. At the interpersonal level, this leads to ignorance, harmful stereotypes, and prejudice; on a large scale it perpetuates institionalized inequality. The members of Multicultural Coexistence understand that our education system should be a safe space for students of all backgrounds to express themselves and have the opportunity to learn. However, due to unequal access, resources, and support, a huge portion of our community’'s students find that they are placed at a disadvantage in our educational system. Receiving a quality education should not be dictated by privilege and status; education should be a natural right. Without the resources, support, and important life lessons that one takes away from educational experience, social inequality will persist.

THE SOLUTIONTo achieve our mission statement, we are using the following strategies:
1) We have coordinated with University City High School to create a tutoring and mentoring program that helps students from all levels to succeed academically. 2) We are raising funds for a scholarship, which will be awarded to a deserving college freshman entering UCSD. 3) MCCE organizes multicultural social events at UCSD to celebrate diversity and increase awareness of the variety of cultural groups that make up our community. |
